Dixie Mine Hike

February 14, 2013

A view from the trail looking East at Four Peaks.

Plenty of boulder formations along the trail as you head towards the old Dixie Mine

More boulders and saguaro cacti along the trail towards the Dixie Mine and Thompson Peak

Those cholla sure look pretty as they glow in the sunlight.  But watch out for those little baby balls that they drop off.

This is how the trail looks after a mile or so of easy hiking.

Here is a pair of saguaro sentinals standing guard along the trail.

More boulders and cholla along the trail.

This is where the trail ends meets up with the road leading to the summit of Thompson Peak.

There is the old Dixie Mine with its big pile of tailings.

Hiking up to the mine takes you past plenty of desert plant life.

This is the view as you get to the top of the tailings pile.

There is the abandoned mine shaft going straight down into side of the mountain.

Here is a view looking down into the mine shaft.

Another view looking down into the mine shaft.  It looks bottomless from here.

There is the view looking Southeast at Fountain Hills with the Fountain going.

There I am at the Dixie Mine on a chilly and windy day

There is an 8X digital zoom view of Thompson peak about 2.5 more miles in the distance.
