Notes

Gilbert Norreys, Vicar of Tetbury, son of Gilbert Norreys

b. abt 1465; d. 1554. He lived at Tetbury, Gloucester, England. He was married to Alice (d. 1558), whom he named in his will. On 20 Jan 1546, the rectory of "Thedburye", Gloucester, formerly belonging to the Monastery of Eynsham, was demised to Gilbert Norres by indenture under the convent seal for a period of forty years. It was through this action that Gilbert Norreys became the Vicar of Tetbury. On 12 Apr 1546, "Gylbert Norrys" witnessed the will of Thomas Mills (spelled Mylys) of Tetbury. Gilbert Norris wrote a will in Jul of 1553 which was difficult to read clearly:

Written on the day of July in the yere of our lord God 1553 and in the reign of the Kyng of our sovereign lord Edward the VI by the grace of God, King of England, , and Ireland, defender of the faith and of the (people) of England and Ireland the supreme geld. I Gilbert Norrys of the town of Tetbury in the Diocese and county of Gloucester, sick in body but to gains be to god, befit of remembrance make my testament and last will in manner and form following. First, I bequeath my soul to almighty God my body to be buried in the churchyard of Tetbury aforesaid. Item: I give to the poor people of Tetbury aforesaid at the time of my burial 20 pounds and that demense again 10 pounds. Item: I give to John Norrys my son a fourth part. Item: to Richard Norrys my son a fourth part. Item: to Lenore (?) Johnson my daughter a fourth part. Item: to Johan Blake my daughter a fourth part. Item: I will that the said sons to be paid unto them within the space of one part of the year next after my decease. Item: I give to every one of my four children aforesaid one flat piece of sylver and a fourth part (of my) sylver shoes. Item: I give to every of my god children that is now (with) Alice 12 shillings. Item: I give to Agnes Johnson 13 shillings 13 pence. Item: to Richard Picodt 10 pence. Item: I will that John Johnson my son in law shall have the indenture of the socage of Tetbury descended unto him by Alice my wife immediately after my decease and she to enjoy it during her natural life peaceably. Item: I give to every child of Richard Norrys 3 pounds 4 shillings a piece except Isabell and she to have 13 pounds 4 shillings. Item: to John Norrys' child 3 pounds. This to be delivered at the decision of Alice my wife. Item: I give to the making of the Long Bridge 10 pounds in value. Item: I give to my brother William Norris my black gown, my best tablet and my jacket. Item: I give to John Norrys my best gown. Item: I give to John Johnson my "sryse" gown. The residue (risydiw) of my goods not bequeathed and this my will to be performed I give to Alice my wife whom I make my executrix. This witness of William and "Lyth Sate", curate, John Watte, John Asede, Humphrey Gastrell, Mullracy Ausiter, Richard Rimmey, Thomas Waller, and others more.

The will named his wife Alice and children: John, Richard, Lenore, and Joan, plus his brother William. Gilbert Norrys may have been a Vicar of Tetbury as had been his ancestors and as was his grandson Edward. In his will he mentions leaving to his "brother William Norris my black gown and my best tablet and my jacket." The gown may have been a symbol of his position in the church.

Alice Norreys, widow of Gilbert Norreys, left a will dated 24 Oct 1558, the beginning of which has been lost to the elements. Here is a portion of that will:

Item, to my wife Alice 10 Pounds of current money and my Johnson (her soninlaw) one fifth of current mony.

A listing of those who owed money to Alice Norreys followed the will. Debtors included John Bryner, Robert Alyne's wife, John Mylys, George Allways, John West, Thomas , Robert Alyne, Thomas Parker, and George Duryng, among those whose names were legible.

The children of Gilbert and Alice Norreys were John, Richard, Lenore, and Joan.

John Norrys. He was probably the oldest son of Gilbert Norrys, having been named first in the will.

+Richard Norrys (d. 1588). He was named second in his father's will. He left a son, Edward. See more below on this line.

Lenore Norrys Johnson. She was married to John Johnson. She is named "Lenore Johnson my daughter" in the will of Gilbert Norrys. In addition "John Johnson my son in law" received an item of clothing from Gilbert Norrys.

Joan (Johan) Norrys Blake. She was married to Blake, undoubtedly the Robert Blake who is named in her mother's will. They had a child, who was mentioned but not named in Gilbert's will.
